(New CPU, Beta Testing, etc.)

I am slowly upgrading my home computer. There are five parts to this, and yesterday I ordered part two, which is the CPU. I had already planned on going to an AMD Phenom II x 6 which, as the last number indicates, has six cores in it, but had not fully decided which variety to get. There are two, the 1055T and the 1090T. There’s a $100 difference in price, and I wasn’t sure if the extra bit of speed was worth it. In the end, after reading a few reviews, I decided the 1090T was worth the extra dough, and that is what I ordered.

The motherboard I ordered is an ASRock M3A790GXH. I got this for two reasons:

1. It can handle up to 16GB of RAM, which is the upper limit of what Windows 7 Home Premium can use. My current motherboard only handles 8GB.

B. It has three PCIe x16 slots. The extra two slots won’t work as fast as the primary slot, but they will work, so I can put three video cards into the system.

Some would question whether I need all that computing power, and I would have to answer no, probably not. But that won’t stop me from getting it. Putting it into a different light, most people’s transportation needs can be satisfied with a small car or truck, but many buy larger vehicles anyway. You don’t need a Cadillac or a Hummer to go to the store, but you’ll see those parked in the lot anyway.

Anyway, I am pretty excited about it. Part three of the upgrade will be RAM, and I will only get 8GB to start with for that. I will probably purchase part four, a heat sink for the CPU, at the same time. I have researched this and picked one out. The last part will be video card #1. My old video card will, along with the rest of my current system, go to my roommate Sam, whose computer is having problems to the point where she can’t reliably play EQ anymore.

Okay, this Nothing Day is getting a bit long, but I have one more bit to share. Last week I signed up to beta test the newest EQ expansion. So far it looks interesting. I can’t release details–they frown heavily on that sort of thing–but I am happy to report there appears to be some interesting innovations.

Speaking of EQ, I managed to complete a progression task for Shaka last night. She now has, by my understanding, one more task to go to complete the first progression series in the current expansion, Underfoot.

Sam’s grandson is with us for one more week. Next Friday his grandfather (Sam’s ex) will pick him up and take him eastward. They’ll meet up with one of her grandson’s friends and then he’ll be in an airplane headed for Italy, where Sam’s daughter is stationed.

That’s enough Nothing for this week. More than enough, I’d say. See you tomorrow.

I am slowly upgrading my home computer. There are five parts to this, and yesterday I ordered part two, which is the CPU. I had already planned on going to an AMD Phenom II x 6 which, as the last number indicates, has six cores in it, but had not fully decided which variety to […]

[5
