{"id":300,"date":"2011-01-11T09:37:47","date_gmt":"2011-01-11T16:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/?p=300"},"modified":"2011-01-11T09:37:47","modified_gmt":"2011-01-11T16:37:47","slug":"bleeding-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/?p=300","title":{"rendered":"Bleeding Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For many years, there has been talk of how the medium of television would bleed into computers and the internet until television as we know it did not exist.\u00a0 <em>Everything<\/em> would be on the internet.\u00a0 No more networks, no more cable TV, just the internet and a plethora of entertainment choices.\u00a0 There has been some advancement towards this; some productions are released only to the web.<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, things have gone the other way, after a fashion.\u00a0 A creative woman named Felicia Day created a web series called <em>The Guild<\/em>.\u00a0 Although squarely aimed at a niche audience&#8211;folks like myself who play EverQuest or others who play WoW&#8211;the series gained a fairly large following.\u00a0 A sequel &#8220;season&#8221; was produced and made available in places outside of the ubiquitous YouTube.\u00a0 Now there are four seasons out there, and three of them are available for instant play on NetFlix.\u00a0 The video giant makes their instant videos available through several devices, such as the Wii, and there&#8217;s been talk of a Netflix set-top box.\u00a0 So something from the web has now bled into television.\u00a0 Not exactly cable or broadcast, but at least part of the on-demand market.<\/p>\n<p>This is likely not the last such occurrence.\u00a0 There&#8217;s been plenty of instances of TV shows on the web&#8211;every episode of <em>South Park<\/em>, for example&#8211;and sooner or later some webisode thing will end up on cable or even broadcast.\u00a0 Some of these webisode things are truly well done, as <em>The Guild<\/em> demonstrates.\u00a0 Sure, the production quality of <em>The Guild<\/em>&#8216;s first season isn&#8217;t quite on par with most regular TV shows, but it did well on the limited budget it had.\u00a0 The actors were clearly professionals and passionate about their work.\u00a0 I look forward to a sitcom with broader appeal being produced.<\/p>\n<p>The way I see it, television isn&#8217;t really going anywhere.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like cassette tapes:\u00a0 Doom predicted for a couple of decades now, but it just hasn&#8217;t happened.\u00a0 Television, both broadcast and cable, will find an audience for a long time.\u00a0 The networks and local stations have ventured into cyberspace, making sure to present sufficient material there to keep audiences interested and aware of their presence.\u00a0 The smart ones will look for series like <em>The Guild<\/em> and bring them into a bigger audience.\u00a0 Technology bleeds both ways.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many years, there has been talk of how the medium of television would bleed into computers and the internet until television as we know it did not exist.\u00a0 Everything would be on the internet.\u00a0 No more networks, no more cable TV, just the internet and a plethora of entertainment choices.\u00a0 There has been some [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[4],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/300"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=300"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/300\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":302,"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/300\/revisions\/302"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=300"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=300"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=300"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
