{"id":404,"date":"2011-03-14T08:39:33","date_gmt":"2011-03-14T14:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/?p=404"},"modified":"2011-03-14T08:39:33","modified_gmt":"2011-03-14T14:39:33","slug":"daylight-savings-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/?p=404","title":{"rendered":"Daylight Savings Crime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rant on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s that time of year again.\u00a0 Time for my semi-annual rant about the idiocy of Springing forward and Falling back.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little more irritating to me this time (no pun intended) due to personal circumstances; I am just starting into a heavy overtime schedule at work so the loss of an hour of sleep Saturday night was pretty unpleasant.\u00a0 I felt pretty out of it most of the day yesterday, and I can&#8217;t say I have fully recovered yet today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I would put this personal consideration aside except, quite simply, personal consideration is part of my argument against DST.\u00a0 Not just mine, but that of others.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a proven fact we have biological clocks.\u00a0 These clocks can be shifted, as frequent travelers can testify, but it&#8217;s not easy and a body has to adjust to adjusting.\u00a0 Frequent travelers can make this adaptation, but with the time shift happening only twice a year, the rest of us have a tougher time.\u00a0 At least one study has suggested the shift forward in the spring contributes to a rise in auto accidents on the Monday following the shift.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other studies done have offered up conflicting conclusions about the usefulness of this shift.\u00a0 Some suggest there is a one or two-percent savings in utility (gas and electricity) consumption, others suggest there is an <em>increase<\/em> in utility consumption.\u00a0 What this tells me is the actual effects are likely negligible.\u00a0 Even if studies showing a two or even three percent savings, I don&#8217;t think that savings is worth the hassle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an economic impact, too.\u00a0 Some sporting and leisure industries see an increase in revenues with the Spring change, but other industries such as farming see a decrease in productivity.\u00a0 Farmers have traditionally opposed DST because while their daily schedules follow the sun, the workers they hire follow the clock.\u00a0 They lose some of the most productive time of day from their farmhands when the clocks are shifted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The short version of all this is that Springing forward and Falling back is a hassle.\u00a0 The arguable benefits of these transitions are small at best and are easily countered by the disadvantages.\u00a0 It&#8217;s long past time we ended this time shift one way or another and end it for good.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rant off.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rant on. &nbsp; Yes, it&#8217;s that time of year again.\u00a0 Time for my semi-annual rant about the idiocy of Springing forward and Falling back.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little more irritating to me this time (no pun intended) due to personal circumstances; I am just starting into a heavy overtime schedule at work so the loss of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/404"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=404"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/404\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":405,"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/404\/revisions\/405"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=404"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=404"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.shadowkatmandu.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=404"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
