Nothing Day! (Facebook Response, Video Cards, Etc.)
0Monday’s post and yesterday’s post about the mosque controversy in NYC drew a response…on Facebook. Since I opened yesterday by mentioning the Cause on Facebook I was invited to join, I linked the two mosque posts there and got a few comments. I was thinking (kind of hoping) somebody would comment here, too, but no such luck.
I did a little research on video cards. My motherboard supports a thing called Crossfire, which is the ATI version of what Nvidia calls SLI. It means you can have multiple video cards on your system and they will work with each other. That is, they will directly communicate, acting like a single video card. For this to work, however, one has to get not just a motherboard capable of Crossfire but video cards, too. ATI puts out several, and they are very expensive. The low end version, which comes with 512mb of RAM, costs about $300 from Amazon. The video card I had already chosen, also an ATI but without the Crossfire technology, has twice the RAM but is half the cost. The low end Crossfire card can support two displays while the non-Crossfire card supports up to three. The non-Crossfire card also supports ATI’s Eyefinity technology, which means you can make the three displays it can control act as a single display. The Crossfire card does not have this support. So I am sticking with the card I originally chose, which is the Sapphire Radeon HD 5770. This is a mid-range card in the HD series.
I won’t actually be getting this video card for a couple of weeks. Next week’s paycheck is going towards Other Things. Most importantly, I am sending a computer to my son, Spaceman. I’ll be installing Windows 7 on it. I am expecting to pay $100 – 150 to ship it and the monitor I am giving him. Also, one of our cats needs to see the vet; he seems a bit ill. If there’s enough money left after that to get the video card and have enough to pay regular expenses, I’ll do it.
Enough rambling for today. See you tomorrow.
